The Awards in 2022

The ninth annual HSE Open Access Research Awards were presented in Dr Steevens’ Hospital on Monday 5th December.   

The awards were presented by Dr Philip Crowley (National Director, Strategy and Research) and represented a welcome return to normality after the past two years of online-only events. The newly-refitted national library HQ in Dr Steevens’ allowed the awards to be staged as a hybrid event, with attendees joining in virtually.The newly-refurbished HLI HQ provided a congenial setting for the ceremony.

 

Dr Crowley spoke about the scientific and societal benefits of research being carried out in an Open Access context, and paid special tribute to those researchers carrying out research in addition to their clinical duties. He also announced the winners in the five subject categories, as well the special innovation award and the overall winner.


External judge Dr Jonathan Drennan spoke warmly about the entry by overall winner Andrea Bowe, praising it for its methodological approach in a complex environment, and its innovative use of a supportive environment. He described it as a highly effective intervention.

 

Dr Drennan also praised the special innovation awards winner, Martin Boudou, for the timeliness of his paper analysing enteric infections during the flood events of 2015-2016, which demonstrated the impact of climate change on public health in Ireland. He noted its innovative use of data and statistical modelling of the highest quality.
