Keeping up to date: Journal content alerts

HLI current awareness service

Journal content alerts and e-TOCs

What are eTOCs?
The “table of contents” of your preferred journal, or journals, can be sent to you as an email or notification, as soon as it is published.

Why set up alerts?
The information comes to you - you do not need to keep track of when a journal issue is going to be published, and you can see pretty quickly if the content is relevant to you.

How to set them up?
You can set up an account with “Read by QxMD” to personalise alerts across a variety HSE Library-subscribed journals, or set up alerts directly with the journals, databases or publishers of your choice.
You can see the examples below for more details.

Read by QxMD

Read by QxMD by Ruth O'Rourke

Read by QxMD is a free app and web service that provides a single place for healthcare staff to keep up with new medical and scientific research, read topic reviews and add journal titles and keywords to follow. Read is interfaced with PubMed; new research is filtered based on selected keywords or journals, and is then delivered to the user. When following a journal, you are notified as soon as new content is added. New journals are integrated into Read regularly and journal preferences can be edited at any time.

  • Go to https://read.qxmd.com/ or download the app, and set up a free account.
  • You will be asked about your country of practice, profession, and occupation, and you need to provide a name and email address.
  • Choose “set up institutional access”, and select “Health Service Executive, Ireland”, to ensure that you have access to all subscribed content.
  • Once your account is set up, you can personalise your feed by journals, keywords, and collections. You will receive notifications based on those choices.

Journals and databases

Individual Database Alerts

Some databases enables users to set up RSS feeds or emails alerts when material is added into the database.  There can sometimes be a delay in content of new journal issues being added.  It usually requires users to set up a personal account on the publisher site.
