References & Citations: Generative AI

Tips and resources to help you to compile and manage references.

Referencing generative AI tools

Any time you have used work that did not originate with you, it needs to be acknowledged and cited. Content fully produced by generative AI tools is not acceptable in academic or research writing. It is difficult to cite content produced by generative AI as it is not static, and will generate new information even if using the same prompt. It may be acceptable to use generative AI when brainstorming or for other defined purposes. Educational institutions and publishers will have their own rules around use of AI in your work, and what is considered acceptable, so ensure you consult with whoever you are producing the work for, so that you have up-to-date information.

At present, there is no single accepted way to cite the use of generative AI tools. Again, please discuss this with the educational body or publisher you are producing the work for where possible. Otherwise, follow the general conventions for the referencing system you are using, and ensure that you note the specific AI tool (such as ChatGPT, CoPilot, Perplexity), and the prompt(s) you have used.

Scribbr has some examples of how to cite ChatGPT in various citation styles:
